Jean Toomer’s “Becky”

The main theme of this poem is Becky and her two fatherless sons. Not quite sure what figure does Becky ans her sons represent in the story, but my instinct is telling me that she might represent an American prostitute or something.
The story is told by somebody else who as I believe does not live in that neighborhood but they are aware of Becky and how the community(back and white people) treat her.

I thought that was the main theme too, but I do not agree with the prostitute idea, but it is an interresting view.

yeah that prostitute idea is kind of weird but I couldn't think of anything else. By the way, what name are you going to give a woman who is having children without a know father?

For this story, you have the right idea that it circles around Becky and her two sons, but these actual people can't be the theme of the story. Think about how the public reacts to the situation they are in and why, when deciding on a theme. This plays a big part in the story and is the main idea with the connection between Becky and her family, and the society. I also wrote about "Becky" and I found the theme to be dissociation from the familiar. I got this idea mainly from the way society feared Becky because she was engaged in something that was not tolerated in their community.

I thought that the theme of the story was Becky's unique situation with society and how her family plays a role in that situation. I'm not sure about the prostitute idea but that idea is diffinitely a way to think out of the box.
